Measurements of glucose and amino acid concentrations, temperature and pH in the habitat of Polymorphus minutus (Acanthocephala) in the intestine of domestic ducks.

Most individuals in an infection of the acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus (Goeze, 1782) in domestic ducks are found in a region extending from 65% to 75% of the distance along the host's intestine (Crompton & Harrison, 1965). The exact location and mode of attachment of the parasites in this habitat has been described by Crompton, Shrimpton & Silver (1965). Acanthocephalans, like ces...

Lipid, bile acid, water and dry matter content of the intestinal tract of domestic ducks with reference to the habitat of Polymorphus minutus (Acanthocephala).

The data presented in this paper were obtained to define more accurately the environment of Polymorphus minutus, an acanthocephalan parasite of ducks. This parasite inhabits a region of the duck's intestine extending from 60% to 80% of the intestinal length (Crompton & Whitfield, 1968). In the case of Momliformis dubius, an acanthocephalan parasite of rats, Edmonds (1965) found that nutrients a...

Lactic and succinic acids as excretory products of Polymorphus minutus (Acanthocephala) in vitro.

When adult worms of the acanthocephalan parasite, Polymorphus minutus, are incubated for 4 hr. at 417 ±0-5° C. under near-anaerobic conditions in a balanced salt solution containing radioactive glucose, they excrete two substances which contain approximately equal amounts of radioactivity. It was suspected that these metabolites might be organic acids. They were found to be non-volatile, dialys...

Measurements of the osmotic pressure in the habitat of Polymorphus minutus (Acanthocephala) in the intestine of domestic ducks.

Many of the attempts to culture intestinal helminths in vitro appear to have been made with relatively little knowledge of the physico-chemical conditions which occur in the alimentary tract of vertebrates. For example, only a few measurements have been made on the osmotic pressure of the contents of the intestinal lumen and even fewer have been made on the degree of variation of the osmotic pr...

Amphipod intermediate host of Polymorphus minutus (Acanthocephala), parasite of water birds, with notes on ultrastructure of host-parasite interface

From November 1997 to June 1998, 3,118 specimens of Echinogammarus stammeri (Karaman, 1931) (Amphipoda) were collected from the River Brenta (Northern Italy) and examined for larval helminths. Larvae of Polymorphus minutus (Goeze, 1782) singly infected the hemocoel of 23 (0.74%) crustaceans; all these larvae were cystacanth stages. This is the first record of Polymorphus minutus in E. stammeri....
